Why Split the Features into Six Blocks

Look directly at Notion’s official pricing page and you will see that AI inside Notion is now a product suite, not a single feature. The early “click inside a page to generate a paragraph” feature has been folded into Notion AI Core. Meeting Notes, Research mode, Enterprise Search, Notion Agent, and Custom Agents each have their own permissions, quotas, and use cases. Separating these six blocks is the only way not to be misled by the feeling that “AI seems included everywhere.”

① Notion AI Core: In-Page Generation, Rewriting, Translation

This is the most basic feature set, visible on every plan (Free / Plus are Limited Trial).

Entry points:

  • Press space on a blank page: call AI to draft.
  • Select a paragraph → floating toolbar → AI Edit / Translate / Summarize.
  • /ai slash command: choose an action directly (Continue writing, Improve writing, Fix spelling, Translate, Summarize).

Best for drafting paragraphs, changing tone, organizing meeting notes, and translating short text.

Note: On loosely structured long documents, summaries can grab the wrong points. Add headings and bullet lists first, then summarize. The accuracy difference is large.

② AI Meeting Notes: Recording, Transcripts, Summaries, Follow-Ups

Hand a recording or live meeting to Notion, and it produces a transcript, structured summary, and follow-up action list, all kept inside the Notion page.

Best for teams with many weekly meetings where action assignment already depends on Notion tickets.

Note: Free / Plus are trial-like. Heavy meeting recording will hit limits. Business is where this feature is listed as included.

③ Research Mode (Beta): Detailed Report-Style Output

Research mode reads workspace content, connected tools, and current web information at the same time, then produces a long-form report. Compared with Notion AI Core’s single-block generation, this is closer to “produce an eight-section report in one run.”

Best for competitor research, customer background briefings, and industry mini-reports.

Note: It is still in beta and still changing. Do not use it for external-facing documents without checking. Sources still need manual verification. “Has a citation” does not mean “is correct” is the common red line for every AI search product.

④ Enterprise Search: Internal Q&A Across Notion + Connected Apps

This is the feature that truly separates Notion AI in 2026.

Connectable data sources listed in Notion Help include common apps such as:

  • Slack
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Google Drive
  • Jira
  • GitHub
  • Gmail / Google Calendar
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Box / OneDrive / SharePoint
  • Linear / Asana / Salesforce / Zendesk

Some connectors are still in beta. The actual available list should follow the current Notion Help Center version.

Answers include source citations. For teams whose knowledge is scattered across tools, it pulls questions like “a teammate mentioned it in Slack, the doc is in Drive, and the ticket is in Jira” into one dialog box.

Limits to know first:

  • Business / Enterprise only: Free and Plus do not include it.
  • Model selection affects behavior: Some model choices may use only web information and not read the workspace / connected apps. Verify the configuration.
  • Citations still need human checking: Retrieved content needs verification, especially for decision-related answers.

⑤ Notion Agent: Completing Multi-Step Tasks

This moves from “one-off generation” to “can complete sequential actions.” Notion Agent can use workspace, connected apps, and web context to run workflows such as “scan Jira epics / Slack discussions / Drive docs → draft this quarter’s OKR or launch plan → write it into the right Notion page or database → send email, schedule a pre-meeting calendar event, and ask the owner to confirm.”

Note: Notion Agent currently does not support actions such as automatically leaving comments in Notion comments. Steps that require commenting still need human handling.

Best for fixed processes, internal operations that can tolerate final human review, customer support follow-up, and weekly report consolidation.

Red line: Keep a final human approval step for irreversible actions such as sending external email, deleting data, or automatic transfers. Review the audit log before granting more permissions.

⑥ Custom Agents: Agents Grown by the Team

Enabled in Notion 3.3, with a stronger tuning interface in 3.4 part 2. Custom Agents let Business / Enterprise teams build their own agents with triggers, schedules, and source permissions. Examples:

  • Patrol every morning at 9:00 / pull yesterday’s issues → summarize → leave a Slack message.
  • Every Monday afternoon, organize last week’s customer questions → write them into the FAQ database.
  • When a new order arrives, automatically classify it by product / channel / customer segment.

Note: Starting 2026-05-04, Custom Agents use Notion credits ($10 / 1,000 credits, Business / Enterprise add-on). Estimate traffic first, or the bill will be surprising.

Conclusion: Who Does Not Need Notion AI

  • If your core data is not in Notion and also lives somewhere Notion cannot connect to, such as local folders or unsupported tools, integrate the data first before considering an upgrade. If the data is in Slack / Drive / Jira / GitHub / Gmail, tools already supported by Business-level connectors, it may make sense to evaluate Business + Enterprise Search directly against your workflow.
  • If you only want a smart writing assistant, ChatGPT tutorials, Claude AI tutorials, and the complete Gemini guide are more direct.
  • If local Markdown ownership matters, Notion is not that kind of tool. See the Notion AI vs Obsidian vs Logseq comparison.
  • If you want Custom Agents to run irreversible actions but have not prepared audit logs and an approval flow, slow down.

Notion AI’s value is not having many features. It is that it can read your workspace. If the data is inside Notion, Business is the starting point for the full version. If the data is outside, you need a different tool.

FAQ

Q: What can Notion AI’s writing features do?

Inside a page, it can generate, continue, rewrite, adjust tone, check grammar, shorten, or expand text. Type /ai or press space in an empty block to open it. It is part of Notion AI Core.

Q: Are Notion AI summaries accurate?

They are stable on clearly structured Notion pages with headings, bullet lists, and tables. If the source text is messy, the AI can miss the point. Clean the material or add headings before summarizing.

Q: How do you use Notion AI database automation?

Add an AI property to a database, define the prompt, and new or updated entries can automatically fill in categories, summaries, or tags. AI Autofill can also batch-fill empty fields. Since Notion 3.4 part 2, the Database AI Autofill interface has become simpler.

Q: Can Notion AI Q&A search external data?

Enterprise Search can connect to apps such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, and Jira. This is Business / Enterprise only; Free and Plus do not include it.

Q: Does Notion AI translation support Traditional Chinese?

Yes. Short paragraphs are stable. Long-form output may sometimes mix Traditional and Simplified Chinese, so formal documents still need review. In terminology-heavy scenarios, DeepL or a larger model is usually steadier.

Q: What’s the difference between Notion AI free and paid plans?

Do not think of it as just a usage quota difference. Free / Plus are Limited Trial. Business is where Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search beta, and premium integrations fully open up. Starting 2026-05-04, Custom Agents use Notion credits ($10 / 1,000 credits). They are a Business / Enterprise add-on, so estimate traffic in advance.
