AI Presentation Tools Split into Two Types: Generate Content vs Design
| Type | Examples | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Generate content | Gamma, NotebookLM, Felo | Create structure and copy from prompt / source |
| Design | Canva, Google Slides, Beautiful.ai, Pitch | Templates, brand, editable layout |
Before comparing tools, decide first: do you need AI to “think through content” or “design slides”? Most people end up choosing one tool from each category and combining them.
Gamma: Fastest Structure Draft, but AI Look Needs Repair
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Free | 400 signup credits, no refresh |
| Plus | 1,000 monthly credits, with rollover within limits |
| Pro / Ultra | See official billing page |
| 2026 update | Gamma Imagine (AI image generation) launched 2026-03 |
| Strength | Fastest at turning prompt into sections / cards; CJK text is stable |
| Weakness | Visuals still feel AI-generated; formal proposals need a design tool afterward |
NotebookLM: Strong Content, Conservative with CJK Visuals
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Standard | 100 notebooks, 50 sources/notebook, 3 Audio/day, 3 Video/day |
| Pro | 500 notebooks, 300 sources/notebook, 20 Video/day |
| Ultra | 500 notebooks, 600 sources/notebook, 200 Video/day; Slide Decks / Infographics watermark removal |
| Strength | Source-grounded content, citations, Audio / Video / Slide Deck outputs |
| Weakness | CJK text visuals distort; not ideal as direct external deliverables; some mobile app features missing |
Canva: Strong Templates, AI Quality Needs Caution
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Form | Templates + Magic Studio / Magic Design AI |
| Strength | Huge template library, brand asset library, cross-format design: social, posters, presentations, video |
| Weakness | AI-generated presentations are mostly English-first; 2026 SKU / pricing details depend on official pages |
In practice, Canva’s value is concentrated in the final layout phase. In many scenarios, the AI generation part still goes to other tools.
Copilot for PowerPoint: Enterprise Microsoft 365 Scenario
| Item | Details |

Beautiful.ai: Automatic Layout
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Starting point | Pro around $12/month, 14-day trial; check official pricing |
| Strength | Smart Slides auto-layout, stable structure for business decks |

Five-Tool Comparison Table
| Dimension | Gamma | NotebookLM | Canva | Copilot for PPT | Beautiful.ai |

| Design quality | Medium, AI look | Weak, CJK text distorts easily | Strong, templates | Medium | Medium-strong, auto-layout |
| CJK text | Stable | Text stable / visuals weak | Depends on template | Medium | Medium |
| Editable PPTX | Yes, sometimes drift | Limited, often flattened | Pro required | Full | Full |
| Free quota | 400 signup | Included in Standard | Free templates / PPTX export requires Pro | None | 14-day trial |
| Best use case | Drafting, meeting decks | Research, source organization | Brand, cross-format design | M365 enterprises | Standard business decks |
When Manual Work Still Wins
- Client proposals where brand consistency is non-negotiable.
- Lots of data charts that must be precise.
- Strict control over fonts, color swatches, and logos.
- Formal long CJK text output, because visual rendering can fail.
In these cases, AI is still a drafting accelerator, not a final-output machine.
How to Choose: Scenario Table
| Scenario | Recommended stack |
|---|---|
| Students / final reports | NotebookLM for content + Google Slides layout |
| Office workers / internal weekly decks | Gamma draft + Google Slides / internal template finish |
| Marketing / client proposals | Gamma content draft → Canva template → human polish |
| Enterprise M365 environment | Copilot for PowerPoint |
| Standard business decks / fixed structure | Beautiful.ai |
| Multi-source synthesis | NotebookLM |
Penchan’s Take
My main workflow is Google Slides and Canva, because existing templates can be reused directly. AI presentation tools are for “pulling content structure and first-draft paragraphs”; humans take over final layout.
I have tried Gamma. Text and structure are good, and CJK output is stable, but the visuals do not escape the AI look, so the deck still moves to Google Slides. NotebookLM is strong at content extraction, but CJK text distortion is a real pitfall; I use Slide Decks only as a content-structure reference and rebuild visuals in Google Slides / Canva. Canva’s direct AI presentation generation is not yet good enough, but its template and brand asset library are still daily-use tools. That is the specific context behind my criticism of Canva AI generation, not Canva as a whole.
Copilot for PowerPoint is not in my workflow because I am not centered on M365. Beautiful.ai and Felo have not been long-term tools for me, so those sections keep a research-summary voice.

FAQ
Q: What is the best free AI presentation tool in 2026?
It depends. Students / research / source-based decks → NotebookLM Standard. Prompt-based drafting → Gamma Free (400 signup credits, no refresh). Existing Google AI subscription → Google Slides + Gemini. There is no single best; only best fit.
Q: Gamma vs Canva AI: which is better?
Gamma is smoother when you want to generate a full presentation structure from a prompt. Canva still leads when you already have content and need brand assets and cross-format design across social, posters, presentations, and video. Gamma has the stronger AI generation flow; Canva has stronger visual flexibility.
Q: Is Microsoft Copilot worth paying for presentations?
If your company already uses Microsoft 365 and you live in PowerPoint, yes. For individuals, students, or people outside M365, Gamma Plus or NotebookLM is usually better value. Copilot requires Microsoft 365 Copilot licensing; actual SKU and regional pricing depend on Microsoft.
Q: Which AI presentation tool should students use?
NotebookLM first. Upload references, class recordings, and notes, then generate source-grounded slides with citations. Gamma is the second choice; free credits are enough for several reports. Final decks still need Google Slides / Canva for layout and proofreading.
Q: Which AI tool is best for CJK presentations?
Text stability: Gamma and Google Slides + Gemini. Strong content structure but risky CJK visuals: NotebookLM. Canva AI generation is more English-oriented, but Canva’s templates and font support are strong enough for final layout.
Q: Does Copilot for PowerPoint require payment?
Yes. Copilot for PowerPoint has no standalone free version and requires Microsoft 365 Copilot licensing. Starting 2026-04-15, unauthorized users in tenants with 2,000+ seats also do not see Copilot Chat inside Word / Excel / PPT / OneNote. If budget is limited, Gamma or NotebookLM is more practical.
Q: Is Felo AI presentation worth using?
Felo focuses on generating presentations directly from search results, useful for quickly organizing web information. It has less design flexibility and fewer templates than Gamma, and its free quota is tighter. For drafting from your own documents, NotebookLM is still more stable.
